University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)

Plain-English definition

The University Health Insurance Plan is the health coverage Ontario's participating universities require for international students, and for some international employees and their families, because they are not eligible for OHIP. Enrolment is generally automatic and opting out is limited to narrow cases. UHIP covers many of the same services as OHIP but not all of them, so students may also need a separate plan for other costs.

Where this applies: Ontario universities. Colleges and other provinces use different arrangements.

How it works

UHIP is arranged through the university, and premiums are set each year. Check your school's international student office for the current premium and enrolment dates.

Exemptions are limited, for example to students who already have OHIP or another approved plan.

UHIP is basic hospital and medical coverage. Prescription drugs, dental and paramedical services are usually covered by a separate student health plan, if at all.

Why it matters

International students in Ontario cannot rely on OHIP. Knowing that UHIP is basic coverage, and what sits outside it, helps a student or their family see the gaps before a bill arrives.
